A significant chunk of calls to American poison control centers about energy drink consumption involved children younger than 6, according to a new study presented before an American Heart Association meeting Monday.
(iStockPhoto) The first review of energy drink-related calls to the American Association of Poison Control Centers' National Poison Data System found that more than 40 percent of such calls between 2010 and 2013 involved “accidental exposure” to energy drinks by young children.
“Exposure to energy drinks is a continuing health problem,” said Steven Lipshultz, the study's main author who is also the pediatrics chair at Wayne State University and pediatrician-in-chief at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. “It wasn't like this is a fad and dying off. The number of calls has been steady and consistent.”
